Ride is well known as being one of Britian’s most successful rock bands of the nineties. Originating in the England’s popular “shoegaze” era of rock, Andy Bell and Mark Gardener originated the group in secondary school. The boys recruited Laurence Colbert and Steve Queralt and formed Ride. Getting their start selling Ride tickets at school events and open mic events, an early demo of the band was heard by Jim Reid of the Jesus and Mary Chain. Manager of the Jesus and the Mary Chain Alan McGee caught wind of the group and signed ride to his label, Creation Records. Ride saw early success with creation, releasing a number of EPs and placing on the UK top 75, a first for the group and the label. Though ride was considered a leader in the Shoegaze era, Bell rejects this notion though cites contemporaries like My Bloody Valentine, House of Love, Stone Roses, and sonic Youth as early influences. Reaching the charts and appearing on BBC Radio 1, the band was ready to release their debut album. The stage was set for Ride to release Nowhere, what would go on to become one of the nineties greatest rock albums. A perfect balance of 90’s pop and rock, the record is full of quality guitar playing and whirring lyrics. The masterful debut effort paid off as the group saw much success in the UK. Nowhere reached number 11 on the UK charts, causing the media to label them music’s “Brightest Hope” in 1991. With a demand for new material, Ride released the Today Forever EP later that year to satisfy eager fans. The band released a more pop-esque follow-up album with Going Blank Again in February 1992. Gaining positive reviews, the band continued to see success in and outside of the UK. When Ride tickets went on sale for their first international tour, the tour had sold out within two minutes. Consistently touring for the next two years left the band fatigued. Getting back to Create with Carnival of Light in 1994, the sound shifted to a more traditional style of rock, abandoning their signature style. Fans were not happy with the release and neither was Ride themselves, publicly criticizing the album. Creative differences within the group and a lack of quality records led to the group pulling their follow up Tarantula from shelves a week after its release in March 1996. A falling out between Bell and Graham led to them pursuing their separate endeavors. Andy Bell went on to play bass for 90s powerhouse Oasis while Mark Gardener spent the early 2000s pursing a solo career. As members were asked about a possible reunion, they were all receptive and entertained the notion. Now in 2014, Ride is preparing to embark on tour for the first time in over 20 years. Ride tickets are now on sale for a handful of their 2015 reunion tour dates.
