Named after a track from David Bowie’s Hunky Dory, shaggy-haired quartet The Kooks were at the forefront of the British indie-rock revival of the mid-00s. Formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, frontman Luke Pritchard, guitarist Hugh Harris, bassist Max Rafferty and drummer Paul Garred signed to Virgin Records just four months after their very first gig. Inspired by the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Police and Bob Dylan, their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, arrived in 2006 and, alongside the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The Fratellis, helped to spearhead a new wave of British guitar bands. Something of a slow burner, the record eventually shifted over a million copies, peaked at number two in the UK and spawned a string of hit singles including “Naïve,” “She Moves in Her Own Way” and “Ooh La.” The band also went onto win Best UK and Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards and receive a BRIT Award nomination, but suffered a setback in 2008 when they were forced to fire Rafferty over his disruptive behaviour. However, after hiring Peter Denton as his replacement, the group bounced back in style later that year with a second LP named after the studio it was recorded in. Konk not only hit the top of the UK charts, but also made the Top 50 in the US, while the tracks “Always Where I Need To Be” and “Shine On” added to their tally of hits. The group’s third LP, Junk of the Hearts, took several years to record and eventually arrived in 2011 to a muted commercial and critical response, while the band’s line-up then changed again shortly after when an arm injury forced Garred to retire. Alexis Nunez took over his role for 2014’s Listen, a more adventurous affair which saw the group add hip-hop beats and gospel melodies to their signature indie-rock sound. The album received some of the greatest reviews of the band’s career, gave them a third consecutive Top 100 album in the US and was supported by an extensive world tour which included sets at Milwaukee’s Summerfest, Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival and South Korea’s Pentaport Rock Festival.
