However, the musical is planning a Broadway return in July of 2016 according to one of the producers of the show. Based on the 1994 autobiograhpy To Be Loved: The Music, The Memories of Motown, it tells the great story of Berry Gordy's founding of the Motown record label where he signed big time artists such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson.

History Of Motown: The Musical

Since opening on Broadway in 2013, Motown: The Musical has become a hit show on the Great White Way. The Broadway jukebox musical premiered at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in April of 2013 following previews during the month prior. Following the life Motown Records creator Barry Gordy and the subsequent formation of his iconic label, Motown: The Musical tells the stories of some of soul and R&B music’s biggest stars. With national attention garnering over the musical’s first several months of production, Motown tickets became increasingly in demand for Broadway shows. So much success was found in its infancy stages that a national tour began in April of 2014. The tour will run through September of 2015 and hit more than 30 cities across the U.S. before traveling to London in the fall. Such critical acclaim across the globe has made Motown: The Musical one of the fastest-selling and highest-grossing performances on Broadway. Alongside its increasing success, the show has also received four Tony Award nominations in 2014, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Valisia LeKae), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role (Charl Brown), Best Orchestrations (Ethan Popp and Bryan Cook) and Best Sound Design of a Musical (Peter Hylenski). Though the musical didn’t win any of those awards, Motown tickets have continued to dominate the secondary market day-in and day-out on Broadway. With success piling on as demand keeps growing, Motown: The Musical will likely remain a staple in the heart of Manhattan for years to come.
