The best-selling American girl group of all time, TLC conquered the charts in the 90s thanks to their vibrant blend of R&B, pop and hip-hop, but were arguably just as famous for their chaotic personal lives. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia, Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins, Rozonda ‘Chilli’ Thomas and Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes made an instant impression with their 1992 debut, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, a playful but pro-feminist New Jack Swing affair which produced three US Top 10 singles. The trio also attracted considerable attention for their quirky fashion sense, with Lopes often wearing a condom over her left eye in an attempt to promote safe sex. But the group suffered their first of many setbacks when they were forced to cut short a tour with MC Hammer after T-Boz revealed she suffered from sickle cell anaemia. In 1994, Lopes was sentenced to five years’ probation for torching the home of her footballer boyfriend Andre Rison and also spent time in rehab battling her addiction to alcohol. This behind-the-scenes drama only seemed to heighten interest in the group and 1994 sophomore CrazySexyCool subsequently became one of the blockbuster albums of the decade. Showcasing a smooth, seductive and soulful sound, the record spawned two number one singles (“Creep,” “Waterfalls”), picked up two Grammy Awards and sold 23 million copies worldwide. However, TLC found themselves in the midst of another crisis when it was revealed that a bad contract with former manager Pebbles and the LaFace label had forced the group to sign for bankruptcy. After several years of sorting out their financial affairs, the trio returned triumphant once again with 1999’s futuristic-sounding FanMail. Peaking at number one on the Billboard 200, the LP produced two chart-topping hits (“No Scrubs,” “Unpretty”), won three Grammys and was supported by an extensive world tour which became the highest-grossing ever by a female group. Another hiatus followed in which Lopes released a solo album, Supernova, and scored a UK number one with Melanie C. But tragedy struck during the recording of their fourth album in 2002 when Lopes was killed in a car crash in Honduras. After T-Boz and Chilli completed the remainder, 3-D hit stores later the same year but failed to produce any major hits, and the pair announced that their 2003 performance at New York’s annual Zootopia would be their last. In 2004, the duo launched a TV talent show, R U The Girl, and went onto make sporadic public appearances together throughout the decade. In 2015, they launched a full-blown comeback with a co-headlining tour with Ne-Yo and New Kids on the Block and a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund their fifth LP.
